• Sweeping:  Make sure that any dirt, dust, or other forms of detritus are removed from your shipping container.  We suggest using a strong bristled broom and work your way from the back end of the container.  It may be dusty inside, so we also recommend that you wear a dust mask of some form.
• High Pressure Washing:  If you have access to a pressure washer, or can borrow or rent one, it will expedite the cleaning process greatly.  For safety, we recommend wearing some type of goggles or safety glasses.  You’re going to be working in a confined area and anything you spray loose may bounce around – eye protection is important.  Again, start at the back of the container and work your way towards the doors.  Pay special attention to the corners and seams.  Also, keep an eye open for any signs of excessive wear in the floor.  Once the inside dries you may want to consider repairing any potentially weak spots.  After the inside is sprayed out we recommend cleaning the outside next.  The high pressure hose will expose and possibly remove any loose paint or corrosion on your container.
• Rust Treatment:  Inspect both the inside and outside of the shipping container for signs of rust or corrosion.  If you do find any rust it can be treated with apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, a natural rust remover.  Apply the vinegar to the rust and rub it with a cloth or strong brush. If vinegar doesn’t do the trick or isn’t fast enough for you, try rubbing the rust spots on your cargo container with aluminium foil.
• Painting a Shipping Container:  Once the container is completely dry, inside and out, go over the shipping container with a medium grit sand paper.  Either an orbital sander or belt sander will speed up the process.  You don’t need to remove all of the paint, but we do recommend attacking any spots on your container where the paint is peeling, flaking, or showing signs of wear.

  After you’ve finished sanding your shipping container apply a primer coat of paint.  The primer coat will help give it a stronger seal and base to prevent any moisture or corrosion in the future.

  Finally, after the primer coat is dry apply a thick, exterior paint to the inside and outside of your storage container.  Most exterior paints will work, however if there’s any question it’s best to ask a professional or sales associate at the place where your purchased the paint.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has a lot of people excited for the celebration, and people from around the world will be traveling to the United Kingdom to help the Queen celebrate her 60 years on the throne.

One consequence of the increased volume of travellers is the severe lack of housing for them.  Noting this, Her Majesty the Queen has granted permission for a temporary hotel to be installed on the grounds of Windsor Castle.  The hotel will be constructed from 75 converted shipping containers and will provide much needed housing for 600 performers taking part in the celebrations equestrian pageant.  Russian Cossacks, Indian presidential bodyguards, and cowboys from Oklahoma are just a few of the performers who will spend three nights in the two story structure.  Along with the equestrians, in excess of 500 horses from 17 countries will be traveling to Windsor for the event.

Each steel shipping container has been modified to contain four en-suite rooms, complete with a double bed, television, and wireless internet.  The container hotel will be built next week and will be located close to Windsor Castle’s iconic Round Tower, with the actual celebration taking place from May 10-13, 2012.

Simon Brooks-Ward, director of the pageant, said: “It’s the perfect accommodation solution for this important international event.”

Puma City was designed by LOT-EK, an innovative design firm based in New York City. Back in 2008 LOT-EK was charged with designing a fashionable, functional, and mobile entertainment complex for Puma. Accepting the task, they created an 11,000 square foot facility, spanning three levels. The first level houses two retail spaces, both with double high ceilings, and four container wide open spaces. The second level contains offices, a press area, and storage; while the third level provides a welcoming bar, lounge, and event space.

In all, PUMA City is constructed from twenty four, 40' containers, including a number of connectors to secure the structure both horizontally and vertically. The overall unit was designed to be mobile, and has been taken down, transported, and reassembled a number of times. Given the nature of it's construction it can travel easily through conventional shipping lines. So easy in fact that it's made appearences in New York, Alicante, Boston, Stockholm. Truly innovative, it's the first structure of it is size to be completely mobile.

Modified shipping containers are continuing to grow in popularity, and LOT-EK has built on their success with container design and created PUMA's "Drive Drop and Shop Unit", or DDSU.

There are a few standard questions that you should have the answers to before buying starting to search for a container.

1. Do you need help moving the container? It sounds obvious, but it will save some time if you’re prepared for this question up front. Many people can help to arrange the delivery of your container, but you’ll need to budget for this in advance.

2. Will you need help unloading the shipping container from the truck? If you’re going to be grounding the container at a location for a long period, the delivery truck may be able to ground the container without much assistance. However, depending on the available room the truck may need assistance from a fork lift or crane to unload the container.

3. Structurally, a wind and water tight container will provide the same service at a discounted cost – the service being keeping your items clean and dry. If you're converting or modifying the contaniner, you may need a newer unit.

5. Where do you need the container to be located?  The transportation cost for an empty container can be expensive, especially with the recent increase in fuel prices. In most cases it’s always best to find a container that’s close to where you need it. The exception is if you’re looking for either a custom container that’s been converted, or possibly a refrigerated or tank container. Maison Container Life is situated in in the French countryside and was designed by Partick Partouche.  The single family, three bedroom home is 2,238 square feet (208 meters) and constructed from eight recycled shipping containers.  Aside from the containers, the core materials used were terracotta, metal, wood, polycarbonate, and glass.

There are two levels to the home connected by spiral staircase.  On the first floor you’ll find a spacious reception area, kitchen, garage, powder room, and laundry room.  The second floor contains a remarkable three bedrooms, office, bathroom, and pantry.   The overall assembly of the structure took only three days and required one large crane.

The home overlooks the bucolic farmland through its glassed façade, and a great deal of natural interior lighting is provided through the generous windows. Over the past few years, refrigerated containers have been increasing in popularity as a storage method.  When paired against building a storage facility, containers can be transported or relocated, modified to meet your specific needs, and in some cases rented, instead of purchased.  The benefits of container storage are countless; however some companies still need to consider a more cost effective method for infrequent use.  Refrigerated containers are less expensive than many other options; they can still be expensive for a storage solution that may not be needed 100% of the time. Renting or leasing a storage container can save your business money, especially if the container isn’t needed for daily use.  Refrigerated containers can cost around $10,000-$15,000 depending on the size and condition, and this amount is a sizable investment for any size company.  For a caterer who typically works with private events, renting a container for one job is much more sensible decision for both storage and transportation.

The structure of the floor is typically made of steel joists or cross members that are six inches deep (150mm), and placed 20 inches apart (508 mm).  These cross members run across the container and are welded to each of the beams on either side of the container.  This design allows for the weight to be carried corner posts and the floor.  If you make any modifications to the cross members it can weaken and compromise the structural integrity of the container.  Without any modification, containers can carry as much as 30 tons; enough to support the weight of a forklift packing the container with cargo. The container flooring itself can be made from several different materials.  Historically, it has been constructed from 25-30mm thick marine plywood, consisting of the hardwoods Apitong or Keruing.  Wood is ideal because of its strength, ability to withstand abuse and resist denting, and its natural friction.  And while these two woods are strong and pest resistant, the available supply has decreased in availability of over the years.

A recent trend has been to use bamboo flooring in shipping containers.  Bamboo grows quickly and can be cut to similar sizes to plywood.  Another alternative to the traditional Apitong or Keruing is steel flooring.  The steel flooring typically plates designed with a non-stick pattern or painted.

Refrigerated shipping containers typically have aluminium flooring.  The aluminium flooring is designed to have "T" section planks running the length of the container.  The planks are raised slightly to allow for cold air flow and circulation.  In some cases, refrigerated containers used for domestic transport have flat aluminium checked plate flooring.

Modifying or replacing the flooring is relatively easy, by design.  It’s normal for the floor to have some natural "wear and tear".  Expect some cracks, holes, or missing layers in the shipping container floor.  Considering the history of the flooring is typically unknown, and it’s safe to assume that it’s been treated with various chemicals to prevent insects or rodents from, it’s often suggested that the flooring be replaced rather than covered over.  If you’re not able to replace the flooring then it’s a good idea to seal the floor with polyurethane or apply a coat of epoxy paint.  Most importantly, be very careful if you sand the floor.  Sanding can release trapped fumigants and the exposure could be dangerous.  After a couple of years the fumigants and chemicals will naturally dissipate, but it’s always good to take extra precautions.

The book gives a survey of different types of buildings built with shipping containers around the world. It has a lot of examples (90) of stylish buildings designed with containers. It is beautifully illustrated with many high quality photos and small design plans. The book provides a short description of the buildings and a few simple building details. Could have been more details. But, if you want some ideas for new buildings with shipping containers this book will definitely help you.

Build in 2006, Keetwonen is an innovative student housing project built from 1050, used 40' shipping containers. The project was so innovative that it won a Funda award that year for best execution in construction. The containers were modified in China, and delivered to Amsterdam. Once assembled they created the largest container city in the world. Let's take a quick walk through the process: At the factory in China, the containers were modified and the housing was produced. Keetwonen was a huge gamble on the part of the administration, and it's paid off in a big way. The facility was intended to be decommissioned in 2011, but it's been extended through to 2016.

Boxpark, a shopping mall made from used shipping containers, is one of the world's first "popup shopping malls".

Located directly at the Shoreditch High Street Tube station in London, the mall is constructed on a temporary site from 61 recycled shipping containers. The lower floor consists of 41 containers, and the remaining 20 shipping containers are on the upper floor. Almost all of the stores on the first floor open directly onto the sidewalk, with the exception of the retail unit (Nike) closest to the Tube station, which still has street high visibility. The design of Boxpark is subtle. 1. The "Father of Containerization" was Malcom McLean (1913-2001). In 1956 he developed the metal shipping container to replace the traditional "break bulk" method of goods handling. 2. There are currently over 17 million shipping containers in the world, and five or six million of them are currently zipping around the world on vessels, trucks, and trains. In total, they make around 200 million trips a year. 3. It's estimated that there are 10,000 shipping containers lost at sea every year. That's almost one container every hour! Lost containers are often damaged by waves and sink quickly, but some may float for a little while. Those that do float, tend to do so just below the surface.

4. Roughly 97% of all dry freight shipping containers are manufactured in China. This is primarily due to the fact that much of the world’s dry freight products are produced in China. It's easier to produce the container close to the cargo, than to reposition and empty container around the world.

5. As of 2010, Shanghai China was the busiest container port in the world. 29,069,000 containers passed through the port annually. For reference, that converts to 2.4 million monthly, 79,641 daily, or an astounding 3,318 hourly!

The port of Los Angeles processes 6,500,000 annually, ranking it #17 in the world, and #1 in the United States.

6. Largest container ship in the world is the Emma Maersk, owned by the A. P. Moller Maersk Group. In 2006 she was the largest container ship ever built, measuring 1302 ft (397 meters), and as of 2010 she and her seven sister ships are the longest container ships that have ever been constructed. Emma can carry between 13,500 and 15,200 20' containers.

7. All commercially used containers are tracked with a BIC code, similar to a license plate on a car, and they all carry a standard format [XXX-U-123456-1]. The first three letters signify the owner, the next letter is the category of the container (U = freight container, J = freight related equipment, Z = trailers or chassis), followed by a six digit serial number and finally a check digit.

8. Shipping containers can last over 20 years! Provided they are taken care of with regular paint and maintenance, a good container will serve you for a long time.

9. A standard 20' shipping container can hold 1,150 cubic feet, while a 40' high cube contains 2,700 cubic feet. Just for reference, a 20' container can hold around 3,596 shoe boxes, and a 40' high cube can hold 8,443 shoe boxes.

10. 95% of the world’s cargo moves by ship. While FedEx and similar logistics companies are quick, they only manage a small percentage of goods. Due to higher costs, it still makes more financial sense to transport goods in high volume ships.

High Cube Container

A high cube container is similar in use and design as a standard dry shipping container. The key difference between a standard dry container and a high cube container is that a high cube container is 9'6" tall; while a standard container is 8'6" tall. In a 40' container this extra height gives the high cube 2,694 cubic feet, 344 cubic feet more than a standard container which has 2350 cubic feet.

Refrigerated Container

To comply with existing manufacturing and intermodal shipping designs, refrigerated containers have the same exterior dimensions as standard dry shipping containers. Refrigerated containers are heavily insulated and have integrated cooling systems to keep goods cool or frozen during transportation.

Most commonly, products transported in refrigerated containers are foods such as fruits and vegetables, and meat and dairy products.

Flat Rack Container

Flat rack containers come in 20' and 40' lengths and are capable of carrying 52,900 lbs (24,000 kg) and 74,800 lbs (34,000 kg), respectively. They have collapsible end frames and lashing rings are typically available on the rails, corner posts, and floors. Typically, flat rack containers are used for shipping oversized or heavy items or equipment.

Q: Will a container home pass certification and inspections?

When speaking in perspective about the economy, many future home owners are triple checking costs and prices and keeping an ear open for any kind of discount or savings on construction labor and costs, maintenance reduction, and holding onto any or all of the equity in their pockets. So, when it becomes a possibility to construct an attractive, secured, modern house with the typical classic great looks of the case study houses of the mid 20th Century, for a small chunk of the price of traditional construction, people start to get interested.

Size can affect your price, because a more common size like a 20 foot or 40 foot steel container will be a better bargain due to available inventory. It will also be easier to find these sizes second-hand, as they are the most common for shipping overseas. If you need a larger or smaller size container you may have to shop around more to find the best deal.

Your physical location also affects the container price. If you are located near a seaport you have a better chance of being near multiple container retailers. You may even be able to get a good used steel container from your local shipping yard. If you live far away from accessible containers you may have to pay to have it delivered to you. You may also not be able to get the best pick since you cannot view it in person. Condition and age also affect price when a container is used or rented. This should not be a factor for a new or one trip container, as it should be in top condition. You will also want to make sure that all doors are working properly and swing smoothly and easily.

The final determining factor for shipping containers prices is modifications or added features. A basic steel container comes with no extras. It will be just be plain and sturdy, possibly with a door if it is a big container. There are a multitude of container modification options. If you are planning to use it for building purposes you can have extra doors, windows, electricity, sanitation, and insulation put in. If you plan to use the container for a portable vendor cart or storage unit, you may wish to have a roll-up door installed for easy access. Another good choice is a refrigerated container to store bulk food. Other options include special door locks, paint, and business logo application. The variable that has the greatest impact on cost is the concrete itself. Due to the volume of concrete required it's the best option is to hire a concrete crew to pour the redi-mix concrete. Hiring a crew will save you a great amount of time and energy. As we discussed in the previous concrete footings article, bagged concrete doesn't provide a great volume of concrete, and for your slab foundation to set properly you'll need to have it poured quickly.

One area where you do have the option of saving on costs is building the form. A slab foundation for a shipping container is designed differently than a normal slab foundation; due in part to where the weight being carried on the edges and corners of the foundation.

Materials Needed: Redi-mix Concrete - total amount depends on your geographic area Loose stone or gravel Rebar, welding mesh and ties, bricks for supporting the rebar 2"x6" or similar wood planks to construct the form If you've decided to construct a slab, it's well advised to take some time and draw out your plan on paper. This can help you to better calculate the costs associated with building your slab foundation and reduce the number of surprises later on.

Begin by tieing off the area that will be used for the foundation. The size of the area depends on the size of your container, so take extra consideration when you measure it out making sure that all corners are square so that your foundation will fit your container. It's a good idea to post the area with stakes, then tie them off so you have a strong visual idea of the size and space required.

Once the area is tied off you can begin digging out the foundation. The size and depth of the foundation will depend on your needs, but you'll want to make sure that you have room for a 4-5" stone bed where the concrete will be poured. The weight of the container will be carried in each of the corners, so you'll need to clear an area that's 1'x1'x1' in all corners. After the area is excavated, and before the stone is laid, the ground will need to be compacted to reduce the chance of unwanted settling and cracking later on.

With the area cleared and stone bed in place you can begin building the concrete form. Start by building the entire perimiter with 2"x6" lumber. Using a 2"x6" will allow you to have a form that's 4' deep. Once the perimiter form is in place, construct the 1'x1'x1' forms for the corners.

With the footing form structure in place, you have one final step before you're ready to have the concrete delivered, and that final step is the is reinforcing your slab with rebar and welding mesh. Create the floating reinforcement by laying the mesh across the founding and tieing it together. Once it's in place, use the pieces of brick to prop, or float, the reinforcement 2" above the stone bed. Building the reinforcement provides extra strength once the concrete is dried making it an important part of the structure.

With the completed form and reinforcements in place, your measurements and calculations double checked, you're ready to have the concrete poured and smoothed prior to the delivery of your shipping/storage container delivered and set in place.

Using concrete footings as a foundation for your shipping or storage container falls in the middle cost range of the three options. It's cost effective, durable, but requires more time and attention when building the container foundation.

Before you being to build the concrete footing foundation for your container, you need to decide how deep the footing must be. If you live in an area with no frost this decision may not be necessary. However, if your area is prone to frost the freezing of the ground can shift your foundation and cause problems later on. The only way to prevent "frost heave" is to build your footing at least 6" below the frost line. The frost line is the maximum depth where the ground will freeze in the winter and this depth varies from 50" in North Dakota, to 0" in Florida. The second step is to decide how large your footings must be. As a general rule, one or two stacked 40' ISO containers will require 10" deep, x 20" wide, by x 20" wide (not included the extended frost footing). The chart below offers suggestions on how large your footings should be.

The third step is to mark off the area that the storage container will take up. Measure the area out, making sure that all corners are square so that your footings are in the correct place. It's a good idea to post the area with stakes, and then tie them off so you have a strong visual idea of the size and space required.

Decide which is the highest of the four corners and begin the process here. Dig out an area wider and slightly deeper than required by the footing and compact the soil in the bottom. Follow this up by adding a 3" base of loose stone. Using the plywood and planks, construct a concrete form to the dimensions decided earlier. If you're going to reuse the same form for each footing it's better to assemble the form with screws so that it's easier to take it apart and reassemble it for each footing. Lining up the footings properly is key to this project, and the first footing will be the point from which the others are built. It's also advised to add rebar to increase the strength of your footings and prevent them from cracking. Rebar should be cut 8" longer than the depth of the hole, and driven into the ground so they are flush with the top of the footing form. The rebar should be a few inches apart in each footing, and the amount of rebar depends on the size of your footing.

Once the form is placed in the hole and the concrete poured, allow it to set for 48 hours before removing the form.

The next footing must be measured and placed based on the height of the first one. To do this accurately you'll need a laser level with which to measure the height. With the proper height and distance lined up, you're ready to pour your final three footers or more if you require the added security. Repeat the same process of digging the area out and installing the stone and concrete form, and pouring the concrete until all footers are in place.

Ideally, this should be complete several weeks before the container is due to arrive. The actual time may vary depending on the heat and humidity in your area, and it's best to ask a professional the appropriate time to allow the concrete to cure.

Part 1: Wood Beam Container Foundation

Part 3: Concrete Slab Container Foundation

This article provides a general outline for building a suitable foundation. Before you undertake a project like this on your own it's always important to check with a professional to make sure that there are no environmental or other issues that must be considered in your planning.

Wooden Beam Footings

Materials Required:

• Rail road ties, treated 4"x4" Wood beams, or similar skids.
• Loose stone or grave for a gravel bed.
• Spade shovel, gloves, etc.

Wooden beam footings are the least expensive, easiest to install, and the better than leaving your storage container rest on the ground. With minimal site preperation they can be installed shortly before your container is delivered. Before you start, you'll need pressure or oil treated rail road ties or skids, and loose stone or gravel; both of which can purchase from most local lumber yards or at Home Depot. Since steel containers get their support from their frame, you'll only need enough material to support in the four corners. If you'd like extra stability, you can also place support at the middle points on the long side of the container.

Begin to build your foundation by laying out your area and digging a 4" to 6" gravel bed at each end, the length of the end. The gravel bed will provide necessary drainage to keep the beams dry and prevent any premature rotting. Once the gravel beds are in place you can lay out your beams accordingly. It's best to have your container at least 6" off the ground to allow for air circulation. Skirting or fencing can be installed later if you are in an area where there are small animals that may decide to take residence under your storage unit.

Once your container arrives the lift or truck can place it on the ties, however it may require some adjustments to keep your foundation in the proper place.

Part 2: Concrete Footing Container Foundation

Roll Up Doors: Roll up doors do just what they claim to, and that's roll up and out of the way. These doors are typically made of aluminum, or in some cases vinyl, and are very convenient if you have limited space available inside of your storage container. The main concerns with roll up doors are security and durability. They tend not to be as secure as a man door or standard ISO door, and because of the moving parts they are exposed to more wear over their life time. Roll up doors typically range from 6' to 12' wide.

Man Doors: Man doors are the convetional swinging style door. They require more room for movement, but in return the can offer greater strength and security. A standard man door is 84"x36", and there are also industrial grade, heavy duty man doors available at some depots. Industrial grade doors are also 84"x36" and can be 3 hour fire rated. Many depots also offer custom door sizes to better meet your needs. It's best to have an idea of the approximate dimensions when contacting the seller or depot about what type of door you'll need.

One of the most popular containers searched for on ContainerAuction.com are refrigerated containers, or 'reefers'. The questions that we receive have all been fairly consistent, so we decided to write an overview of reefer containers and some facts and uses of them.

Just as the name implies, refrigerated containers are capable of keeping goods cool, but they don't stop there. Reefer containers can be set to maintain temperatures between -13F (-25C) to 77F (25C). They are heavily insulated and can keep products frozen, refrigerated, or at a consistent temperature.

The exterior dimensions of a reefer container are consistent with the standard container sizes (40', 20', and in some cases 10'), this makes them easier to transport and integrated into existing intermodal transport methods. Due to the insulation reefer containers have interior dimensions that are a few inches smaller than standard dry containers.

Refrigerated containers are typically equipped with a three phase electrical supply to power the generator and refrigeration unit. Once loaded on-board the ship they are connected to an on-board power supply to maintain the desired temperature. If the on-board power supply isn't enough to meet the demands of the reefer units an additional "power pack" that's equipped with a large diesel generator may be used to keep the system charged. While at the terminal the ship and containers are connected to the terminals power supply. Once the container transported in some intermodal (road or rail) method it is powered by a generator set, commonly called 'genset'.

If you're able to find two railway sleepers for the container to be situated on this will make the container more level and help to keep it up off the ground and away from excess moisture. It is very important for the container not to be "racked" or twisted as this stops the doors from opening properly. If you're not able to find sleepers, the next best options are leveled concrete block or rail road ties. Keeping your container level and square is important.

How do I paint a shipping container?

Painting will not only make the container look more appealing, it also serves to lock out any rust and corrosion. It's important to note that ordinary house paints won't do the job properly. The process of buying a shipping container begins with deciding what you need the container for, and what type of container you'll need. Will you be using the container for international shipping, converting it into a portable storage unit, modifying it into a container home, or some other purpose? Once this decision is made you'll be able to choose which type of container is best suited for your needs and begin your search on ContainerAuction.com.

The top menu bar on every page of the website is the most common place to begin your search. Type in your city, select the type of container that you need, and click the search button. These search results will display all container are currently offered by our sellers and you can refine your search criteria on this page. You're able to remove criteria by clicking on the [X] that's next to the that item, or add items on the left column to better filter your search results. We encourage you to browse as many of the listings as necessary and register an account so that you can contact the sellers to learn more about the containers that you have an interest in.

Once you find a container that you're interested and you're ready to bid, or in some cases use the 'buy now' feature. Log into your account and navigate to the listing that you'd like to purchase. Next to the red 'Maximum Bid' button is the text field where you can enter in your maximum bid. After you type in and submit your bid you'll be asked to confirm the offer one last time. Once confirmed the seller will also be notified of your offer.

If the auction closes and you're the highest bidder over the reserve amount you'll first receive a confirmation at the time the auction closes.  Then, shortly after 12:00GMT you'll be emailed a copy of the final invoice. Once the payment is remitted you'll be able to make arrangements to collect your container or have it delivered to you.

A common question that we receive on ContainerAuction is "what happens after I've purchased a container? How much does it cost to move it, and can you recommend anyone?"

Let's assume that you've already purchased a container through either the "buy now" option or bidding and have remitted payment.

The next step in the process is to get the release code. The release code is given by the seller or ContainerAuction.com staff, and it's sent to both you and the depot. It's this code that confirms you are the rightful owner of the container and without it you won't be permitted to collect your container. If you've hired a trucking company or some other agent to move the container you'll need to share this with them so that they'll be able to clear the gate without any security issues from the depot.

For buyers in the United States finding a trucking company is quick and easy. On every listing page we've included a tool from uShip.com that provides estimates, and if you decided to proceed, exact quotes from hauling companies. You'll only receive exact quotes if you decided to continue, and many times you'll receive offers from multiple trucking companies and you can choose the best offer for you. All quotes are managed through the uShip system and your contact details remain anonymous until you're ready to accept an offer.

Mixed market signs were reported in July's edition of 'Container Trade Watch'. "A significant reduction in the volume of equipment being retired from shipping-line fleets and continuing trade growth in the first half of 2011 suggest that dry-freight container supply is tight." However, "the reducing volume of orders since April, the recent falls in new prices and the accumulation of over 900,000 TEU of dry-freight containers in Chinese factory yards at the end of June suggest that it is not."

No one can argue that used container prices have been pushed higher over the past few months due to a supply shortage. Container lessors have enjoyed record high utilization rates, and, as stated by CTW, shipping lines opted to keep their containers in service longer before returning or disposing of them. With that in mind, based on this month's sales information supports the notion that we may continue to see prices gradually reduce as we move into the latter part of the third quarter.

Many people interested in buying shipping containers don't live in the main areas where containers are containers are located. This can make finding new or used shipping containers outside of a depot or storage site difficult; especially since not everyone is aware of the closest depot to them, especially retail buyers.

For example, a buyer living in Riverside, CA interested in a purchasing a container may not know that many of the containers available are located in Long Beach, which is approximately 50 miles away. Just as a buyer in Williamsburg, VA may not start their search in Hampton or Norfolk.

To make finding the best containers easier we've introduced a 'Search by distance' feature into the site. When performing a container search on the site, if you don't find containers in your immediate area you can expand the range of your search to include containers within set distances of your desired location. Once there, you can quickly review the containers, get estimates on shipping or delivery costs, and decide which containers are the best suited to your needs and budget.

To search by distance, begin your search on the front page of the website in the 'Advanced Search' box located in the left column. Type in your desired location, select the distance range where you'd like the container to be located, and click 'Search'.

The platform is not designed to change the way that container are currently sold, but to consolidate and stream-line the process. Buyer and seller accounts are given unique features that allow them to plan sales and monitor the market, without having to make continuous updates and announcements. Clients selling containers have the advantage of forward selling their containers through a 3rd party platform, while automating the notification process in order to alert all potential buyers. Registered buyers have the ability to be notified of container listings meeting their desired criteria, as well as search active listings by country, type, or BIC code.

The engine behind ContainerAuction.com is unique unto itself in that it provides live updates on all active auction listings. This means that all current bids and the expiration time of the listing are loaded on the viewer’s screen, without having to refresh the browser. Upon the closing of the listing, the engine automatically notifies all parties and the winner is provided with an invoice and payment details. When the payment is registered a release code is generated and emailed to the buyer, seller, and container depot contact. All release codes are verifiable on the site.
