COR-TEN Steel Containers

"How do I get a shipping container with no rust?" is a common question that we receive through the website; and that question is subjective based on the requirements of the buyer and what they plan on doing with the container. Most used shipping containers will have some surface rust and that's by design based on the container being made of COR-TEN steel.

What is COR-TEN Steel?

More generically called "weathering steel", COR-TEN steel is the trademarked name of the product (trademarked by US Steel). "Weathering" refers to the chemical properties of the steel that allow it to age at a slower rate than other steels, making it ideal for use on the seas as a shipping container.

Why Don't We Use COR-TEN Steel in Everything?

Properly painted, weathering steel can last for many years of active use. However, if the object must look perfect for its entire life COR-TEN steel might not be ideal because the welds can age at a different rate than the steel itself.

Another possible issue is that in weather the steel can bleed over time, damaging concrete or the surface that it's situated on. Luckily for shipping containers they don't sit in one area for a very long time for the first phase of their life.
