Flexitank Containers – Transporting Liquid in a Standard Container

03.07.2015 - Posted by Updated On 03.07.2015

You've probably never thought about transporting liquids and oils inside of a shipping container, but it happens every day and it's a lot cheaper than you'd think. A lot of high value liquids and oils are moved in tank containers, but non-regulated liquids and oils can be moved in a large, multilayer polyethylene or PVC bladder, or "Flexitank" that's installed inside of a standard 20' dry container.

How does a Flexitank Work?

Flexitanks can be installed in 20-30 minutes, and once in place it usually takes 30-40 minutes to be filled with 16,000-24,000 liters. Open the doors, put in the empty bag/bladder and fill it up with whatever is being transported.

The Flexitank is protected by the 20' container shell, and is secured inside of the container just like any other cargo. Flexitank containers can be shipped around the world just like a normal container.

What can be moved in a Flexitank?

Anything that's not regulated or hazardous, food or industrial can be transported in a Flexitank. Some common examples of things moved are:

  • Food,
  • Edible and animal oils and fats,
  • Juices concentrates,
  • Juices,
  • Syrups,
  • Water,
  • Wine and beer,
  • Food additives,
  • Pharmaceuticals,
  • Industrial oils,
  • Additives,
  • Cleaning liquid,
  • Glycerin,
  • Ink,
  • Fertilizers,
  • Latex, etc.
  • Oils,
  • Malt,

Benefits of Using a Flexitank

Flexitanks are a great alternative to tank containers, railway and road tanks, and drums or similar types of packaging. To start, the cost of leasing a tank container is much higher than that of leasing a standard 20' container, and there is also room for substantial savings on the maintenance costs because Flexitanks are disposable.
When compared to shipping liquids in drums, there around a 30-40% cost savings.

Once labor is factored into the equation there, Flexitanks load around 90% faster than drums; plus you'll get greater volume due to lost space between the drums.
