20' Shipping Containers | 40' Shipping Containers | 40' High Cube Containers | Container Housing | How to Buy a Shipping Container |
There is plenty of talk about "affordable housing made from shipping containers", but it's not all affordable. There are a few architects out there blazing the way in very trendy homes that are manufactured with shipping containers as key components. An early builder was "the Beach Box" out in the Hamptons, and the latest to hit the market is a container home in Ferndale, MI, an older suburb of Detroit.
The description and the pictures on the listing page are great. Three bed rooms, three bathroom, walk out balcony on the second floor, and a lot of wide open space. The kitchen has a very functional island for food prep and dining for two, and opens up into the dining room with a table that seats six.
However, if you're reading this hear you know our true interest is in the shipping containers that were used. While we can't find any specifics, based on the pictures and general description it appears to be constructed from six shipping containers, 4x 40' high cube containers, and 2x 20' high cube containers, totaling 1,808-square-foot. Given that the house has 9' ceilings, it must mean they've used new containers as 20' high cubes are rarely found used.
Time to sound off in the comments on a couple of questions:
1. What do you think of the house design and style?
2. Is the price a deal or overpriced?
3. We've never been to Ferndale, MI, so we can't speak for the neighborhood, but can anyone tell us anything about it?
Now for the normal disclaimer, we didn't build the house or supply the shipping containers, but our marketplace does sell containers in Detroit, and throughout the rest of the United States and Canada. If you have any questions or are looking for a container to build a home, use for storage, or even shipping, one of the active sellers on the site can help get you started.
