Moving With a Shipping Container

Moving homes, offices, or other accommodations from one location to another can be very stressful, and many people look for ways to reduce the stress and make the transition a little bit easier. A common idea is to buy a shipping container to have on site and load it at their leisure, then have it picked up and moved to the new location and reverse the process of unloading it and putting everything in its place. Unfortunately, this isn't always as easy as it may seem and there are some issues that are commonly overlooked.

Loading and Unloading

A shipping or storage container can be easily loaded onto a truck at the depot, but on site either a roll back truck, forklift, or crane is needed to unload the container. Assuming the container sites at the location for a period of time while it's loaded, it will then need to be reloaded onto a trailer which will require a forklift or crane that will most likely need to be rented and add an additional cost to the process.

Trucking Costs

Depending on the distance between the pickup, initial deliver, and final delivery locations, this can also add a cost to the process. Most people think that they will use a roll back truck for the entire process, but to move a shipping container any distance on a roll back is more expensive than using a traditional flat bed or chassis. Any cost saving on using a flat bed will quickly be lost when a crane or forklift is rented.

Summary

Many times, it's far more cost effective to rent a van, moving truck or trailer to load, drive it to the new location and unload the items into locally purchased storage/shipping container. Sure, you may need to add an extra step to the process, but in the long term it will save a fair amount of money. It's a good idea to do the math and compare all the associated costs, and consult with people familiar with the industry.
