Shipping Container Sizes and Prices

Intermodal shipping containers are constructed in a few set sizes, and the prices can vary based on condition, size, and location.

To start, shipping containers are produced in standard sizes based on 20' increments; and in the shipping industry this is referred to as a TEU, or twenty foot equivalent unit. These sizes were set as the standard years ago and today all vessels, port handling equipment, and chassis around the world are built around this size. In some regions you may be able to find a 45', 53' and other non-standard sized containers, but they are limited in their ability to travel internationally due to the lack of equipment that can handle them.

Shipping Container Sizes

The three most common sizes of shipping containers are 20', 40', and 40' high cubes. All containers are standardized at 8' wide, and standard height containers are 8'6” while high cubes are 9'6”.

Shipping Container Prices

Prices for shipping containers aren't as standardized as their sizes are, and depending on where you are located. When purchasing a container in the retail market, shipping containers near the coasts, port or transportation hub cities tend to be less expensive, primarily because they don't need to be moved as far by the dealer or operation selling them.

New shipping containers will always be more expensive than used containers, but they may require a little more effort to clean up if you're going to put them in a highly visible area where looks matter. Used containers are typically 10 years old or older, and this is because shipping lines and leasing companies will calculate the net present value of the container and get the most life/value out of it before they can sell it.

All sizes of shipping containers, in all ranges of condition, are available on ContainerAuction.com. The registered sellers are container leasing companies, and some of the largest shipping lines in the world.
