Shipping Container Supply, Production, and the Ongoing COVID Pandemic

The ongoing COVID epidemic continues to impact the available used inventory and production of new shipping containers around the world, and nearly every segment of the industry is feeling the squeeze. From the factories in China, to the retail dealers in the US everyone is seeking creative solutions. At the current time, the biggest issues the storage/shipping container industry is facing at new container production, factory production space, and the overall impact on pricing.

One Trip Shipping Container Production

Blank sailing has become a concern. Blank sailing is when a shipping line either skips a port or cancels the entire string of ports. This means that one trip/new containers are not delivered on schedule if they are delivered at all. Couple this with the increase in freight rates from Asia to Europe and America means that it is more difficult to get equipment into the US at prices acceptable to the market.

Shipping Container Factories

Due to the reduction in trade, of the 26 factories in China only six have remained open. Of those six major factories, they are alternating production between competitors. The remaining factories will be closed for at least six months.

Shipping Container Pricing

The price of a new 20' container has remained relatively unchanged, but that can be expected to move in the very near future. With reduced demand and reduced supply and stock (down 2.4% over last month) it is really hard to say what is going to happen in the near future.

Overall, it is difficult to predict the future. Asia-Europe shipping has been reduced by an estimated 10-15% for the 3rd quarter, and Asia Pacific/US has estimated to have been reduced be 5-10%. In May-June blanked sailing has been at around 20%.
