Shipping Containers and the Port of Savannah, GA

Historic Savannah, Georgia; home to great restaurants, beautiful historic mansions, and one of the busiest shipping container ports in the country. When people think of international shipping in the United States they automatically think of New York/Newark and Los Angeles, which is only natural because of the large population centers based in those area. What many people overlook is that Savannah is one of the busiest container ports in the United States, and ranking in the top 50 in the world.

The port of Savannah, which coincidentally isn't even on the coast, is 18 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The main container terminal is the Garden City terminal which is 1,200 acres and has nearly 9,700 ft of continuous berthing and 1.3 million square feet of covered storage. To move all of the containers the terminal is equipped with fifteen high speed container cranes, and a wide range of yard handling equipment.

Other terminals operated at the Port include Ocean Terminal, which operates a lot of Ro-Ro traffic and large wood products; the Target Corporation Facility, which supplies Target retail stores with products; the Ikea Facility, which services Ikea Furniture and Purdue chicken; and the Heineken Facility, which handles around 7 million cases of Heineken and Amstel annually.

Container Volume and Contents

The Port of Savannah handled just over 3.1 million TEU in 2014, up from 2.9 million TEU in 2013, that's around 8,500 TEU each and every day. The question that is typically on everyone's mind is, "what's in all of those containers?"

The container traffic in Savannah contains a mix of things, but there are two items that stand out from the crowd: chicken and furniture. Savannah has the largest refrigerated container port in the East Coast of the United States, and moves around 40% of the chicken exports out of the US.

With all of that chicken going out, companies like Ikea, Pier 1 and Target import much of the furniture and retail goods that we use every day in the US.
